Adding The Appeal Of The Lodge Decorating Style To Your Home

June 1st, 2009
Lee Dobbins asked:

Personal touches and accessories are the icing on any decorating scheme and should help pull your Lodge decorating style together. This decorating style works fine with natural wood decor which help add to the comfortable and cozy atmosphere of a country lodge. When shopping to enhance your lodge style decor, you should look at decorative pieces such as knick knacks, wall art and pillows.

Paintings and prints add drama and depth to any room, but you must know how to hang it properly for the ideal impact. When arranging individual pieces, put the center of the piece at eye level as the focal point. If you have several piece to hang on one wall, work out the design on the floor initially to discover the most ideal placement. You can add some panache into your Lodge decorating style interior design with prints with an outdoors theme that you can display in rustic frames.

Knick Knacks add personality and interest to your design style. To augment your lodge decorating, take care to pick knick knacks which have a comfortable and cozy look. You might try beautiful flowers in vases or displaying wooden doo dahs and carvings on display shelves. Using decorative pieces that mirror your personality will inject a bit of your own unique style to the home. If you are on a fixed budget, you can try looking at the local flea markets and yard sales where you can often find great accessories for little money.

Decorative pillows are another accessory you can use to spark up your decor. Pillows add a caring touch and look fabulous in any room not the least of which is the dining room, bathroom and kitchen. If you don’t want to buy new furniture for your living room or family room, decorative pillows can help give the lodge decorating look to your old pieces. In the bedroom, coordinate them to your interior design but purchase fabrics and patterns which are diverse with one matching element. Pillows can be displayed in the bathroom and kitchen, think about putting them in chairs, on the hamper or on shelves. Choosing pillows that are made from animal hide will help add comfort and style.

You could also decorate with bird figurines, rustic items, and taxidermy to generate the style of a country lodge. When purchasing your accessories, however, you want to be positive they keep with the interior decorating theme plus have some sort of matching qualities with each other. If you pick decorative items to widely, then you could end up diluting the ambiance you are trying to develop.

Adding accessories made from antlers and gnarly wood to your Lodge decorating style will in effect help the room pop. It’s important, however, that you have a good idea of the kinds of pieces you want so you can stick to choosing just those that suit. You must be sure your accessories are in the proper scale to each other so you should be aware of the sizes of your items when purchasing them. Making note of proportions insures that you will have a great look in any design theme!

Japanese Interior Decorating

Mr.Andrew Caxton asked:

Caring for an oriental rug. Frequent vacuuming is important. When to know how to get an oriental rug cleaned.

You can find nothing lovelier to spruce up your home than a beautiful oriental rug. No matter what your color or design scheme, you can find an oriental rug to suit it, since they come in every imaginable color and design.

Oriental rugs will last for years, and even generations, if they are properly cared for. It may seem like a difficult task to properly clean an oriental rug, but taking a few precautions and knowing the right steps will help assure that your rugs will last a long time.

The first and most important step in preserving your oriental rug is vacuuming. Don’t believe it when people tell you that vacuuming an oriental rug will damage it. The exact opposite is true, as long as you do it properly. Make sure that the beater on your vacuum is at the highest position so that it does not dig into the fabric of the rug and cut and scrape the fiber. You may even consider taking the beater bar off altogether, since all you really want to do is suck the dust and dirt out of the carpet, not scour it.

If your carpet has reached a point, however, where routine vacuuming is no longer keeping it nice looking, it may be time for a proper cleaning. First of all, if anyone ever spills something on your oriental rug, make sure you remove it as quickly as possible. If a stain is allowed to set, it will be that much more difficult to remove. If you have an accumulation of stains and dirt on your oriental rug, it may be time to bring it to an oriental rug specialist. You should be able to find one locally is you check the yellow pages, but if there are none in your area, talk to a dry cleaner who may be able to refer you to someone who can handle this kind of work.

A specialist in oriental rug cleaning knows all about the construction of the rug and how important it is to protect the fiber. It is very important to have the rug cleaned so that the beautiful vibrant colors can once again be seen, without any damage to the material or the risk that the colors will run together. An expert knows how to do this.

These companies realize that an oriental rug can be well cleaned without any long term damage to the rug. Using a special cleaning solution will allow them to do this, and even though the rug is washed in water, it is washed in a special solution that will protect while cleaning it. Trying to clean a rug like this be yourself may only lead to headaches or worse, permanent damage to your beautiful rug. Don’t think you can put the solution in a tub of water and scrub the rug clean. You will ruin the rug you have worked so hard to get clean.

If you want your oriental rug to be a part of your life for a long time, and it certainly can be, you should do your routine care such as vacuuming and quick spill cleanup, and leave the heavy duty care to professionals who will do it right.

Contemporary Interior Decorating

Adam Peters asked:

The contemporary style of home decorating emphasizes the minimalist approach. We discuss what makes or breaks the contemporary style of home decor.

The most important thing to consider before you start decorating, or redecorating, your home or apartment, is what you like. What you want. Do not concern yourself with the current trends, that many home owners seem to follow like lemmings. The most important thing is that you are comfortable in your own home.

There are a few factors that you have to consider. Are you a business person, and will you be entertaining colleagues and bosses in your home? Or do you have a lot of friends whom you’ll be entertaining on a regular basis? Or do you prefer to keep yourself to yourself, with only an occasional friend stopping by? In each instance, you may want to decorate your home in different ways.

It’s not necessary to decorate your entire house in one single style - you can always use several different styles, one per room. It all depends on what works best for you.

Having said that, the Contemporary style of home decoration is currently popular, and like all other styles, it will never really go out of fashion.

The joy of the contemporary style is that it is a “no muss, no fuss” style. Clutter has given way to sparseness, in-your-face designs to a more subtle decor. Simpleness is the watchword.

The contemporary style extends to all aspects of a room: the walls, the floor, furniture, windows, and accessories.

The minimalist contemporary style eschews bold floral patterns such as you’d find in wallpaper, and replaces this with plain colors - shades of white. In this way, photos, paintings or other wall hangings will stand out the more. Also, the walls should not be overloaded with these wall hangings - to do so blunts the impact. It’s like the old cliche, “You can’t see the forest for the trees” or in this case, you can’t see the trees for the forest!

Simplicity must extend to the floors as well. Hardwood floors with their golden gleam add a warmth to every room, although in winter time they can be cool on the feet! Throw rugs in bright colors can add that necessary “je ne sais quois” to any room. If you like wall-to-wall carpeting, again, choose neutral colors - shades of white, once again to highlight the furniture that rests upon it.

Modern furniture is a question of simplicity, of sleekness. There’s no unnecessary ornamentation, Chairs and couches with metallic frames are ideal, although solid wood will never go out of style and will serve to complement a hardwood floor. Sleek occasional tables look nice, but don’t clutter every room with too much furniture. You want room to move around.

What about windows? It’s always nice to have sunshine pouring into your home, but sunlight does fade the color out of your furniture, paintings and carpet. If possible you should get windows with glass that filter out those harmful UV rays. Shutters or blinds made of wood or metal make a nice touch, and curtains or draperies in a neutral color add the finish.

Going for the contemporary look doesn’t have to be expensive. Indeed, since you’re going for the minimalist look, you can cut out quite a bit of furniture and save money that way! But the main thing is for you to be happy with your design - for you to feel that it is “livable.” With its emphasis on simplicity, contemporary home design could be just right for you.

The Role of Lighting in Interior Decorating

May 21st, 2009
Jude Wright asked:

The types of lighting used in a room can dramatically change the way that room looks. Lighting can be a complicated issue, so let’s start by defining some lighting terms.

Incandescent lights. These lights give a nice, golden glow to a room. They are much nicer to use than the cheaper looking flourescent lights.

Downlights are round or square cannisters, usually metal, that are recessed into or mounted onto the ceiling. These lights could be used as spotlights, floodlights or for general lighting.

Table lamps can be used as task lighting or for general lighting.

Uplights are normally one-bulb lights that are placed on the floor behind furniture, glass shelving or plants to give them a dramatic accent.

Strip lighting can be used behind shelves and on stairs and platforms for a dramatic result. The platforms lit this way can appear to be floating above the floor.

Track Lighting. A track makes it possible to use one electrical outlet to supply electricity to many lights along the track’s length. The track can be surface mounted or recessed. Track lighting is one of the most versatile lighting systems available and can be moved around to accent different areas of a room.

Track lighting and recessed lighting can be set to produce an effect called wall washing which, as it sounds, washes an entire wall with light.

Dimmer switches give the ability to provide a different level of light by turning the knob. Dimmers save electricity and provide mood lighting for special occasions.

Different rooms in the home need different lighting. Halls and stairs should be well lit to prevent accidents. Livingrooms need a mixture of lighting options: background, task lights and accent lighting. The best lighting for kitchens is bright overhead lights and extra under-counter lights for task lighting.

All types of lighting fixtures can be found for whatever your needs may be. They can run from very inexpensive to extremely high cost fixtures.

There are special considerations when using lighting for art or wall hangings.

If you are lighting a single picture or painting, try to place the light so that it does not show a reflection on the glass of the art piece. There are special picture lights made especially for lighting pictures but some of these are not very effective since they can only highlight the top or bottom of the picture. Downlights are a good alternative.

When lighting a group of pictures, it’s better to use individual lights in track lighting that can be positioned towards the pictures.

Lighting sculptures can be particularly challenging. You can use uplights, downlights or even strip lights, depending upon the sculpture and its placement. Experiment with different lights and their placement to get the best effect.

Creative use of lighting can really enhance your decorating project. Make use of all of the different types of lighting to make your home a beautiful showcase.

Jazz Up Your Home With The Contemporary Home Decorating Style

May 20th, 2009
Lee Dobbins asked:

Decorating with the Contemporary home decorating style is a fantastic way to give your home a sleek and stylish look. Using this style you can get the feeling of modern design with contemporary style decorating no matter what type of home you have.

One of the first things you need to think about is furniture. You want to choose items that are sleek and made of simple woods or, perhaps, steel to enhance the contemporary home decorating style. Make sure you stick to pieces in a sleek linear style and don’t go for any floral or “old fashioned” style fabrics.

Window treatments is another important part of any interior decorating design. Decorating with simple curtains, drapes or shutters with this interior decorating scheme works great, but you should make sure they are minimalist in design. Depending on the type of look you are going for in the room, you could choose plain sheers or even just wooden blinds.

Take your design theme down to the floor by having matching area rugs. You should try to ensure you pick something which enhances your interior design in both color and style. To provide an attractive decorative look, why not consider short pile or shag rugs in colors like white, black or beiges?

Every design theme needs accessories, so try to choose paintings and other decorative items that set off your contemporary theme. The minimalist aura of this design approach should be mirrored in the accessories so you don’t want to pick anything that is to frilly, nor do you want to clutter up the room with too much stuff. A few simple but carefully placed items will work with your décor to enhance the design.

Lighting is a key factor for any style but you would be smart to be certain that you match yours to the contemporary style. When locating your lighting fixtures for this look, go with something that is modernistic in design and simple in line. Recessed lighting always looks good and for accent lamps you want to stick to simple wood or steel lamps with unadorned shades.

It’s not hard to add the sleek look of the contemporary home decorating style and it doesn’t have to drain your budget either. If you apply smart shopping techniques and look for your items at sales and even buy second hand at consignment stores and yard sales, you can save loads of money while still getting a great look!

Any ideas how to run a contest that will promote my new interior decorating business?

May 19th, 2009
jmb563 asked:

I want to be able to set my own hours so I can stay home with my 3 year old daughter and hopefully soon a sibling. I am planning to start my own home based business helping others decorate/organize their homes. I was thinking some sort of contest where people could send in their worst or best decorating projects. Maybe I could get some of the local businesses(furniture/accessory stores) to participate and make a big media blitz or something. But I’m not sure exactly how to go about it. I also don’t really have any money to work with so I have to be creative. Any ideas? Also, where can I find wholesale accessories and furniture? Thank you!
